Surat : A dramatic turn of events unfolded in the city as the Surat police, along with the court receiver, carried out a raid on Shubh Shree Creations, a textile trading firm, following orders from the Mumbai High Court. The raid was conducted in response to allegations of manufacturing and distributing duplicate saris and copyright infringement against the well-established Surat-based brand ‘Rewaa’.
The raid at Shubh Shree Creations resulted in the seizure of a substantial quantity of duplicate saris, marking a critical development in the legal battle surrounding intellectual property rights and copyright infringement.
The case was initiated when Surendra Chheda, the owner of the Rewaa company, filed a complaint in the Mumbai High Court against Shubh Shri Creation. Chheda alleged that Shubh Shree Creations was producing and selling duplicate saris by replicating the designs of the Rewaa brand, deceiving customers with substandard quality and lower prices. Given that the designs of the Rewaa brand are registered under the Indian Copyright Act, the replication and sale of such copyrighted designs are considered a grave offense.
The Mumbai High Court took prompt action, acknowledging the severity of the allegations and directing the court receiver, in collaboration with the Surat police, to conduct a raid on Shubh Shree Creations. Within the initial two hours of the raid, a staggering quantity of duplicate saris, valued at lakhs of rupees, was seized by the authorities.
The issue extends beyond Shubh Shree Creations, as it has been brought to light that Rewaa Company’s designs have been replicated by multiple other entities within Surat city. Consequently, the Rewaa Company has affirmed its intention to pursue both civil and criminal action against all parties involved in replicating or selling these copied goods. This legal action extends to traders, manufacturers, mill-owners, distributors, and retail traders who are engaging in such copyright infringement.
The Rewaa Company has vowed to adhere to legal directives, taking strict measures, including the potential arrest of those involved in the duplication and distribution of copyrighted designs.
